  • Brutus' Speech - Ethos
  • "Romans, fellow citizens, and friends, listen to me explain my reasons, and be silent so that you can hear. believe me on my honor, and respect that honor so that you will believe me."
  • Brutus' Speech - Pathos
  • "Would you prefer that Caesar was alive and you all die as slaves, or that Caesar were dead and you live as free men?"

  • Brutus used Ethos to explain to the crowd he is a credible source to listen to, because he is speaking on his honor. He asks the people to respect his honor and believe him. He also introduces himself as one of the people, and their friend so that makes them trust him more.
  • Antony's Speech - Ethos
  • "With Brutus' permission--for Brutus is an honorable man; I come to speak at Caesar's funeral."
  • Brutus uses pathos in this quote by appealing to the emotion of the audience on how their life will pan out. He asks them a rhetorical question about if they want to live a life of captivity, which appeals to their emotion of anger, or if they want to live a free happy life which gets them excited.
  • Antony's Speech - Pathos
  • "He brought many captives home to Rome whose ransoms have enriched us all. Did this seem like ambition in Caesar."
  • Brutus uses logos to logically explain his reasoning for killing Caesar. This allows the crowd to listen and agree with Brutus here because they understand his reasons and believe they make sense. 
  • Antony's Speech - Logos
  • Antony establishes his credibility uses Ethos as he acknowledges he is given permission to speak by Brutus which is a man the people honor and love. By telling the people he gave him permission the people will automatically assume he must be trustworthy and credible because he was recommended by an honorable man named Brutus.
  • Antony references achievements or things done by Caesar using logos to explain he was not ambitious. Antony talks about when he saved people and brought them home, reasoning he is a caring and loving leader, countering Brutus' argument that Caesar is ambitious and is only worried about himself.
  • Using pathos, Antony touches the emotions of his audience by asking them a rhetorical question which gets them to think. he asks them if Caesar only cared about himself and his own power, why did he turn down being crowned. This instills anger in the crowd and gets them on Antony's side and against the culprits.
  • "You all saw during the feast of Lupercal I presented him with a kingly crown which he refused three times. Was that ambition?"
