The Crusades began when the Seljuk Turks, a warlike people, gained control of Asia Minor. Byzantine emperor Alexius I asked for help against them from the rest of Europe
Pope Urban II answered Alexius's call for help. He told people that fighting in the crusades would guarantee them a spot in heaven, plus he gave the soldiers quite a bit of money.
The pope's offers were a massive success, and thousands joined the crusades. Almost all of them were willing to die for the crusade.
