  • Good morning everybody, today's lesson will be about bones and how they are formed. There are two major modes of bone formation, or osteogenesis, and both involve the transformation of a preexisting mesenchymal tissue into bone tissue.
  • Endochondral Ossification - The process of bone development from hyaline cartilage.- Important in the formation of long bones- Takes longer time-Stops at year two - Indirect bone growth.
  • Intramembranous Ossification - The process of bone development from fibrous membranes.- Important in the formation of flat bones- Takes less time to form- Stops at year 18 in female and 21 in male-Direct bone growth
  • That will be discussed tomorrow.
  • But why does intramembranous ossification stop at 18 for us females but 21 for males?
