Fierce norse warriors are begging for mercy with grendel. Grendel shows no sympathy for them and that gives beowulf a call to battle.

Beowulf doesn't refuse to go to battle because he believes that he is the greatest warrior that has every lived

Beowulf thinking that he is the greatest warrior that has ever lived has no mentor other than himself. He sees himself as a god life figure in the and will be see like that in his afterlife.
Beowulf takes a journey towards denmark where he is going to fight Grendel. He is not scared to fight grendel but first he need to be allowed to arrive in denmark
Beowulf has to fight grendel which he does and he wins. During the fighting he removes grendels arm
