Henry W. Oliver & The Iron Ore IndustryBorn Feb. 25th, 1840 in Dungannon, Ireland. His company Oliver Iron Mining Co. was one of the major iron suppliers in Minnesota. His spouse was named Edith Cassidy.
Henry W. Oliver founded the Oliver Iron Mining Company on Sept. 18th, 1892 in Eveleth, Mt. Iron and Virgina areas the Minnesota Mesabi Iron Range.
The miners took a lot of time and work to mine iron ore with shovels and pickaxes to remove the iron from the rocks in the ground, which was a really dangerous job back then. Then they used horses and mules to bring the iron ore up to the ground level. Eventually they got steam-powered tools and trains to make it easier.
The iron ore went to The Trout Lake Concentrator in Coleraine, Minnesota be processed so it can be used for steel. Henry W. Oliver spent $10 million to open this plant in 1904.
The iron ore then was transported by train to steel mills owned by Andrew Carnegie in Pennsylvania. The plants used an open hearth furnace system to process the iron ore into steel.
The steel produced at the plants in Pennsylvania went to make things like railroad tracks and frames to build skyscrapers.
