- At the beginning of the book, Xiomara was stoop-sitting trying to enjoy some of her freedom until a drug dealer said to her how she should dress pretty. Once her body matured it started to attract a lot of boys and men and they would sexually harass her.
- "Look the Virgin Mary in the eye, girl. Ask for forgiveness." pg. 198
- Xiomara is forced to go to church and go to confirmation class since her mother is a strong strict believer in god. She has no choice but to go thinking she is a sinner because of her mother saying how her body attracts boys which is the reason why she questions believing in god. Unlike Xiomara Caridad and Twin are more "well behaved" and are more respected by her mother.

- Aman is Xiomara's lab partner. They started having interests in each other and started going to the smoke park to listen to music that they are both interested in. Aman was a very understanding and supportive person. Ever since that day they got more closer to each other.
- Ever since Xiomara got more closer to Aman she finally got caught by her mother. She found out that Xiomara kissed Aman and her punishment was to kneel on a pile of rice and had to stare at a statue of the Virgin and had apologized for sinning.
- Close to the ending her friend Caridad and Twin came to see the poetry bash. Caridad secretly sign Xiomara up to the poetry club where she speaks her poem out loud to a crowd. Once she performed she was nervous but was able to do her performance.
