- This propaganda poster/political cartoon depicts a hypothetical interaction in WW2 between the British Prime Minister David Lloyd George - one of the chief people responsible for the Treaty of Versailles - and Adolf Hitler - leader of Germany. In this interaction, the British Prime Minister asks Hitler, "Where is that treaty I gave you?", referring to the Treaty of Versailles, which was signed by Hitler in 1919, ending WW1. As a result of the treaty, a lot of land and military freedoms were taken away from Hitler, and massive war debts were implemented, causing an economic collapse in Germany. This situation caused Hitler to break the treaty in 1936, remilitarizing the Rhineland, and two years later, attacking and taking over Austria and portions of Czechoslovakia. During these years, Hitler completely disregards the treaty, making many threats and attempts to overtake other areas, as well as creating new alliances. In this cartoon, Hitler responds to Britain's question with, "Oh... was that important?" In addition, you can see that scattered around the room and in Hitler's garbage can, there is the Treaty of Versailles, turned into paper airplanes. Hitler's response showcases the disregard for the treaty that Hitler showed, and the way that Hitler felt about the treaty in the late thirties. Because of the massive reparations for WW1, and the effects that the land seizes and debts had on Germany, Hitler didn't care about the consequences of his actions anymore. He felt that he was stripped of what was his, and that he should get it back, whether or not it would affect the rest of the world.
