When the story begins, we are introduced to Della and Jim. They are a poor couple who live in the 20th century. The story takes place on Christmas Eve.
Climax
Della wants to buy Jim a great Christmas present that he deserves, however, she has only been able to save up $1.87, which is not enough.
Falling Action
Della decides that she can sell her hair for money, and then use that money to buy Jim a present. She receives $20 for her hair and purchases a platinum fob chain for Jim's watch, which is a family heirloom.
Resolution
When Jim returns home from his day's work, he and Della exchange gifts. In a surprising turn of events, it turns out that Jim sold his watch to buy Della a beautiful comb for her hair. As a result of this, neither one will be able to use their gifts.
Della and Jim decide to put their gifts away for the time being and that they will use them later.

Regardless of the mistakes, Della and Jim still love each other very much, and they learn an important lesson about sacrifice and love.
