  • Slavery was illegal in Mexico but many settlers were afraid the Mexicans would not keep their slaves. Most of the American slaves came from southern states where slavery was legal.
  • The deal of cotton and other export goods were produced in Texas, but it was difficult to get these goods to a Mexican port. It was easier for them to ship it to a nearby U.S. city New Orleans.
