- Jenny Fields, a feminist nurse in Boston, assaults a man with a scalpel in a Boston movie theater after he refuses to stop following her when she moves seats.
- Jenny Fields works at the hospital Boston Mercy and works in the newborn ward. She is eventually moved to the intensive care ward and cares for a large amount of soldiers during WW1.
- One of the soldiers that Jenny encounters is Sergeant Garp, a ball turret gunner. He is sent to Boston Mercy after he was hit in the head with flack and suffered severe brain damage.
- Unlike the other soldiers she encounters, Jenny develops sympathy for Garp and begins to take care of him. She also uses Garp to fulfill her desire to become pregnant without having to be in a relationship with a man.
- Once Jenny gives birth, she names her baby boy T.S. Garp after his father
- Soon after Jenny gives birth to Garp, she accepts a nursing position at the Steerling School, an all-boys prep school. Once Garp is ready to begin school, he is enrolled in the Steering School.
