  • Throughout their 8,000 mile journey, 123 miles were spent in Kansas. They thought it was really beautiful, had a variety of game, deer seemed plentiful, and an abundance of raspberries.

  • Stephen traveled by a steamboat and on the map he labeled the area for Kansas to become "The Great American Desert." That view of Kansas stuck and also influenced the us government's settlement policies.
