  • With Macon's Bill, the US hoped to play Britain and France against each other but Napoleon proved smarter and quickly jumped on the deal. This meant that Madison had to stop trade with Britain, bringing them closer to war
  • The Non-intercourse act and Macon's bill #2 both banned trade with France and Britain
