  • You sure do love sweets huh? It’s almost as if you’re addicted to them or something.
  • Ahhh I can’t wait to have something sweet to eat. After eating out, I just needed something that could hit that sweet spot.
  • Skaidrė: 2
  • Um, actually, you know you can’t be addicted to dopamine, right?
  • Well, I mean, I might just be addicted to the dopamine rush I get every time I eat something sweet. And besides, it’s not like I could actually be addicted to sweets anyway.
  • Skaidrė: 3
  • Actually, you can’t be addicted to dopamine. Certain activities, foods, or drugs that make you feel good, release dopamine in your brain. The dopamine released is what causes you to remember the pleasurable experience and want to do it again. Dopamine isn’t what makes you go back to that activity again.
  • Huh? What do you mean? Dopamine is what causes an addiction in the first place, right?
  • Skaidrė: 4
  • Yeah, and actually, dopamine plays a role in whether you have a high or low tolerance to a substance or activity.
  • Oh wow, I never knew that!
  • Skaidrė: 5
  • Essentially, tolerance means the point at which you stop feeling the effects of a drug or substance. For instance, if you have a high tolerance for drinking, then that means you need more of it to feel the effects of alcohol.
  • How does it do that?
  • Skaidrė: 6
  • When you overuse a substance or overdo an activity, the dopamine that is released in your brain becomes too much, and that can make the pathways in your brain overwhelmed, and they can’t handle the high dopamine levels.
  • Skaidrė: 7
  • Yep, and that’s why people go out searching for more of the activity or substance, or for new, better substances. This releases more dopamine because it’s something that you haven’t experienced before.
  • Ohh, so that’s why certain sweet treats don’t hit the same for me anymore?
  • Skaidrė: 8
  • No problem, no problem. Now, you're going to pay for the sweet treats this time, right?
  • This is news to me. I never knew that’s how the brain works. Thanks for telling me this.
