  • Endosymbiotic Theory Chloroplasts
  • Endosymbiotic Theory Mitochondria
  • This is an Aerobic Proteobacterium being engulfed by a ancestral anaerobic eukaryotic cell in endocytosis.
  • Surprisingly, the bacterium does not get digested. Instead, there is a win win relationship in which both cells can live mutually.
  • Over a period of time, the bacterium lost its ability of independent function and became what is known as the mitochondria.
  • This is a photosynthetic bacterium, and was engulfed much like the proteobacterium was.
  • A similar relationship has occurred here as well, but instead this bacterium provides energy through light.
  • Very much like the mitochondria, the photosynthetic bacterium lost its ability to independently function, resulting in the transformation into the chloroplasts.
