Intelligence and thoughtfulness of Piggy at the beginning of LOTF
Piggy is a dynamic character in LOTF since he has changed a lot from the beginning of the book to chapter 9. He loses himself in the midst of all of the chaos and Simons death.
"Them kids. The little 'uns. Who took any notice of 'em? Who knows how many we got?" (Golding pg 46)
Jack breaks Piggy's glasses
"My specs! Give me my specs!... Jus' blurs, that's all. Hardly see my hand-" (Golding pg 41"
Simons Death
Piggy: "You stop it! What good're you talking like that?"... "It was dark."(Golding pg 156)
Ralph: "That was murder" (Golding page 156)
In the beginning of the story, Piggy is one of the only boys who can think rationally and form his own thoughts and opinions. He is not afraid of Jack and stands up for what he thinks is right. He takes care of the littluns and watches them as one of his assigned tasks. His concern for them is shown when one of the smallest boys disappears.
When Jack breaks Piggy's glasses it symbolizes his inability to see clearly and think rationally. Piggy is mad because he feels like Jack is taking advantage of him because of his authority, power, and control, and is visibly upset.
On the other side of the island, the boys see Simon but do not recognize that it is him. The boys form a circle as Ralph and Piggy watch, they too join the rest of them. The next day Ralph struggles to process everything that happened on the night that Simon was killed, but Piggy; the once caring, and compassionate character attempts to reason with Ralph about the incident.
