- For example, today I got this big shot of pain right through my tummy. It only went for a couple of minutes but was still very painful.
- My body is telling me something. I come home from school, exhausted and then when I get into bed at night, I just can’t sleep.
- Ok since we have time on the bus, can you tell me in a detailed way what my period is and how it happens?
- Periods occur once a month. Sometime between the ages of 8 - 15 years, your brain tells the hormones in your uterus that your body is ready to ovulate-
- So ovulation is where an egg is released every month from the ovaries and moves into the fallopian tubes and then the uterus.
- AND before you ask what ovulate means, just about to explain it
- Talk about it on the bus, ok?
- Mum has a theory that the tummy cramps and tiredness that I have been getting may be my body preparing for when I get my period.

- And now Sarah I’m worried. I briefly know what a period is and why it happens, but now I am just scared that I won’t be prepared when it happens next.
- I'm not comfortable using tampons yet.
- I can help you with that, I already have my period so what I do is pack a pencil case with pads, spare undies, plastic bags too.

- And after this, you then start bleeding because the blood lining around the egg gets realised. Surprisingly, you can bleed for multiple days, and even up to seven days.
- That's pretty much what a period is.
- On average we bleed 1/3 of a cup which sounds like a lot but isn't! Sometimes during a period, you can have some pain in your tummy area and other times you don't notice it all.
- Julie eventually got her period at the end of Term 2 in year 8, 3 weeks before her birthday. She had her two parents and her older sister beside her when she got it in the middle of the night at 3:15 am! She was well-prepared thanks to her best friend who was always looking out for her.
