When we got to his office, our sister was already in there. We were both very confused and a little scared.
Bonnie, why are you here?
I came to tell you girls... the barn is burning down. The fire department is there and everyone is safe, but it isn't looking good.
And then we were sent back to class! Deanna and I were in tears. We were so scared and worried about what was happening.
After about an hour, the principal came back and drove us home himself.
All I could do was think. No words came out of my mouth, only staggered breathes. I just wanted to go home.
Are Mom and Dad okay? How are the cows? Is the house on fire too?
You girls doing all right?
When we got home, the barn was already pretty much gone. Firetrucks and ambulances were everywhere. People were watching from the other side of the road. It was terrible. Cows were running all over the fields, burn wounds on their backs and shoulders.
I later learned that the fire was started by a hired man trying to start a skid steer. As he started it, it backfired and caught the hay behind it on fire.
When my dad got home, he saw the barn was on fire. He looked around for his hired man, and saw him walking up the hill, away from the barn.
We never saw that man again.
