- Hello Everyone, On this week Ted Talk we will be discussing how does the constitution protect us.
- One way the Constitution protects us is by letting us be able to be represented. Congress is a bicameral legislature made up of the Senate and the House of Representatives. This means congress has 2 branches or groups. In the senate there are 2 representatives for each state. In the House of Representatives, the number of representatives is based on the population of the state. Both of these 2 group representatives are voted in by the people of that state. This lets the people decide who they want to represent their state and not be represented by a person they don't want.
- The constitution also set up a federalist system. The division of power between the central government and the state government is called federalism. This system was because the USA needed a government that could deal with national issues as well as a state government that could deal with state issues. By not letting one government have complete power over concerns of public life (Federalism), It protects a citizen from unlawful power.
- Another way the constitution protects us by making the government policy itself. The national government has 3 branches of government. Legislative (Congress), Executive (President), and Judicial (Supreme Court). These branches operate under a system of checks and balances. This is a system that makes sure one branch does not have more power than the other branches. This system ensures the government is effective and citizens' rights are protected.
- A third way the Constitution protects us is through the Bill of Rights. The Bill of Rights are the first 10 amendments to the constitution. They were added to protect individual rights. Some amendments in the Bill of Rights include freedom of speech, assembly, and worship of religion. These are only some of the rights in the Bill of Rights. The Bill of Rights in the constitution protects us because It guarantees civil rights and liberties to the individual.
