The author presents the story of the protagonist Sinesio, a man who seeks a better life for his family but like many families in other countries, he is crippled by the lack of education or job opportunities in his country.
Exposition
There are actually three Rising Actions leading up to the Climax: 1. Faustina getting mad at Sinesio for getting a lottery ticket. 2. Sinesio reading his borther's letter and decides to go to America. 3. Sinesio found out about the lottery ticket and ran home.
Rising Action
Sinesio and Faustina were standing staring unbelievably at the gateway to a better life, the ticket to the future.
Climax
Falling Action
The falling action occurred when they attempt to get the ticket out, while Sinesio is blaming Faustina for putting it there.
This winning lottery ticket means that Sinesio and his family will no longer have to endure a life of poverty. It also means that he will no longer have to leave his family behind to find better paid work in America. Unfortuantely, this story ends a cliffhanger.
Resolution
The theme of the short story is poverty and what it inspires in those caught in its trap.
