- "The Scarlet Ibis" by James Hurst takes place in North Carolina in the 1900s. The main characters are the narrator and his younger brother, Doodle.
- Climax
- The brothers are far away from their home, and the older brother is working on teaching Doodle how to walk, crawl, run and more.
- Falling Action
- The older brother is realizing that Doodle is there and that he may actually understand what is going on around him. This gives him a bit of motivation to get Doddle to walk sooner.
- Resolution
- Rain is starting to pour, and Doodle and his older brother start to panic, then something astonishing happens. The older brother is bewildered at the fact the Doodle is running. He now knows that Doddle has learnt from the best,and is able to walk.
- Whenever doodles older brother flaunts to his parents that he taught Doodle how to walk, they were astonished. Then they all started to credit him for all the hard work he put into making this possible. Then he starts to become emotional and realizes that he did all of this for himself.
- Later on, Doodle finds a Scarlet Ibis, but it dies. Shortly after, Doodles body gives out and he dies. His family is devastated and all the hard work that was put into teaching him how to do basic motor skills was all gone.
