- A Tale of two bears and why food storage matters.
- There was once upon a time an ecosystem where two bears lived in harmony with all the plants and animals in this place.
- One day, one of the bears came across an unattended campsite with food dangling from a tree limb. Curious about this new sight and scent the bear pawed at the bag which quickly burst raining down a shower of strange new treats
- Meanwhile, the other bear stumbled upon a different campsite and encountered a bear canister. It also had a new scent and was unlike anything the bear had seen before. After briefly sniffing it and knocking it over out of curiosity, the bear moved on.
- Full from thousands of calories of human food the first bear dozed off into a slumber but already thought of those incredible new foods and how much easier that was than normal foraging.
- Haven gotten no reward for curiosity, the other bear continued along into the forest and found daily nutrition through berries, roots, mushrooms, and other natural foods.
- A few days later, the first bear smelled food in a hiker's backpack and after a brief hesitation approached the backpack and began devouring trail mix in the hip belt pocket. After hollering and making noise the bear begrudgingly retreated though satisfied with a few insatiable bites of human food.
- The other bear ambled near a camp, caught sight and smell of humans and bounded into the woods weary of humans, while leaving the campers with a safe and memorable experience
- The next night, the first bear charged into the same campsite and showed bold aggression and no fear toward humans. The campers were uninjured but ran in fear and lost all their food.
- Walking in the dark, the second bear once again encountered a bear canister. Intrigued once more by the unique scents inside the bear spent a few minutes trying to get to what was inside. However, after not being able to get a grip with paws or jaws the bear quickly lost interest and moved along.
- Realizing that human food could be accessed anywhere humans camped the bear soon went campsite to campsite every night, ruining trips, and threatening the safety of campers all for an easy meal.
- Having no reason to go near humans, the other bear continued living a happy healthy life in the ecosystem as intended.
- RANGER
- After receiving repeated reports of human bear interactions, Land managers made the difficult decision to capture and euthanize this bear. Rangers also begin to hear reports of other animals and bears getting into trouble. Experiencing food even once completely changed this bear's life and resulted in its death.
- Meanwhile, the other bear continues to peacefully coexist and raises her cubs to look for food in the normal places.
- Visitors in the first place now come to an out of balance ecosystem with one of the keystone species (bears) out of wack (explain). Visitors camp in fear and don't have a good experience.
- Visitors in the second location continue to enjoy a thriving ecosystem and have healthy, safe, and natural, wildlife interactions thanks to integrating proper food storage into their wilderness ethics and packing plan.
