- George and Lennie have each other in a world which many people don't have a friend to be around. They help keep each other company and enjoy it. 
- Inevitability

- Due to his status in society, Crooks is not able to have any friends, He doesn't care who it is, he just wants to have a person which he can talk to. 
- Powerlessness
- Now you jus’ get out, an’ get out quick. If you don’t, I’m gonna ast the boss not to ever let you come in the barn no more
- George and Lennie dream of having their own land. Lennie especially wants rabbits and this can only become a reality if they do everything they can to save up.
- Barriers
- Well, I ain’t supposed to talk to you or nothing.
- George knew that it would escalate to something like this. He knew Lennie would eventually cause a problem which cannot be undone.
- What done it?
- Crooks tries to threaten Curley's wife to leave but she uses her higher status to get him to quiet down. He understands he doesn't have much of a chance against her.
- You know what I can do to you if you open your trap?
- As the only female on the ranch, she isn't able to talk with people and the guys aren't willing to risk their job if they get caught talking to her. 
- Why can’t I talk to you? I never get to talk to nobody. I get awful lonely
