Xerxes left Greece because he though the bridges he built to get across Hellespont would be destroyed by the Greeks if he left any later, but the bridges he built were already destroyed by a storm. So he had to sail across.

Xerxes left his soldiers in Athens with orders to attack the Athenians in spring when they return. When it was spring, the Persians attacked again. The Spartans were afraid the Athenians were going to surrender because their city was already destroyed, but they proudly put up another fight.
