  • In 1930 Swedish Chemist George Brandt had his attention caught by a blue ore that came from some Copper workings,
  • Brandt set out to prove that the capability of certain minerals to color things blue was the result of an unknown element.
  • By 1935 Brandt had written Dissertatio de Semi Metallis in which he stated his belief that he had discovered a new element which he called Cobalt.
  • Brandt set out to prove that the blue coloring in certain objects did not actually come from Bismuth which was popular belief at the time, but from a new semi-metal element. He was able to demonstrate clear differences between Cobalt and Bismuth. He was the first chemist to isolate metallic Cobalt.
  • Bismuth Cobalt
  • Notes: High melting point
  • The discovery of cobalt changed our understanding of matter by introducing a transition element that is very hard and has a very high melting point. It is able to remain magnetic at the highest temperature out of all magnetic elements and when it is combined with other metals it becomes a super alloy. Cobalt is also always combined with other elements, it is never found in pure form naturally.
  • Cobalt has aided tremendously in technological change and advancement. Presently, some of cobalt's uses are in batteries, electric vehicles, jet turbines, pigments, knee/hip replacements, and even some cancer treatments!
