Ayatollah Khomeini urged supporters to overthrow the Shah. He was exiled.
The Shah received American support and met with President John F Kennedy in 1963.
President Jimmy Carter allowed the Shah to enter the US for cancer treatment.
Khomeini's return to power & criticism of American influence led to angry Islamic students.
