  • When we flip on a switch, we get electricity instantly and our lights turn on almost like magic but behind this everyday convenience of life is a rich and varied history. It has been a journey of almost 270 years and counting every since electricity was discovered by Benjamin Franklin to the modern inventions we have today from electric cars zooming around to computers being charged by light
  • Discovery of Electricity. 
  • Electricity was discovered and understood by many scientists. Benjamin Franklin is given the credit for discovering electricity. In the year 1752, Benjamin Franklin conducted an experiment using a kite and key on a rainy day. He wanted to demonstrate the relationship between lightning and electricity. Franklin realized the dangers of using conductive rods and instead used the conductivity of a wet hemp string attached to a kite. This allowed him to stay on the ground while his son assisted him to fly the kite from the shelter of a nearby shed. This enabled Franklin and his son to keep the silk string of the kite dry to insulate them while the hemp string to the kite was allowed to get wet in the rain to provide conductivity. A house key belonging to Benjamin Loxley was attached to the hemp string and connected to a Leyden jar; a silk string was attached to this."At this key he charged phials, and from the electric fire thus obtained, he kindled spirits, and performed all other electrical experiments which are usually exhibited by an excited globe or tube."

  • The kite was not hit by visible lightning; had it been, Franklin would almost certainly have been killed. However, Franklin did notice that loose threads of the kite string were repelling each other and deduced that the Leyden jar was being charged. He moved his hand near the key and observed an electric spark, proving the electric nature of lightning.After the revelations of Franklin’s experiment, many scientists started building upon his work and started studying and understanding the concept of electricity. Scientists have found evidence that ancient people had experimented with electricity much before Franklin’s discovery of electricity. In 600 BC, the ancient Greeks found static electricity by rubbing fur on amber. In the year 1600, English physician William Gilbert used the word “electricus” to explain the force between the objects when they are rubbed with each other. The first practical application of electricity was the invention of electric dynamo by Michael Faraday in the year 1831. This set an electrical revolution around the world. Thomas Edison invented the light bulb in the year 1878. In the late 1800s, Nikola Tesla invented alternating current and induction motor.
