  • Laurie started his first day of kindergarten. He was a big kid now so he wore jeans instead of overalls.
  • Laurie and his parents ate lunch after school. He told them that the teacher spanked a boy named Charles for being fresh and made him stand in the corner.
  • Charles was being bad every day. He got spanked by the teacher for hitting her. He hit a girl's head on the seesaw and made it bleed. He hit a boy in the stomach, said a bad word, threw chalk, yelled in class, and was put in the corner for stomping his feet on the floor.
  • Laurie told his parents that the teacher gave Charles an apple for being good. He said Charles was the teachers helper. He passed out crayons and picked up books. He was good for more than a week then went back to being bad.
  • Laurie's parents discussed meeting Charles' mother at the PTA meeting. They were curious about Charles' behavior. Laurie's dad said to invite Charles' mother over for tea after the meeting.
  • At the PTA meeting, the teacher told Laurie's mom he had trouble adjusting at first. His mom said he normally adjusts fast and maybe it was because of Charles. The teacher said they didn't have a student named Charles in kindergarten.
