- By 1992, I am sadly running the store alone and I'm stuck. I feel pressure to maintain the family legacy. I work too hard for my daughters to fall into the same trap. I'm so adamant that they go to college I'm not even going to teach them to slice lox!

- Aaron "Toddy" Todtman immigrated to NY from Poland as a child. After serving as a cook in WWII, he started a retail food business. His sons both went to college, but Jessica's dad, Jay, dropped out and has been working at or running Toddy's ever since.
- Jay and Laurette met in 10th grade. They both enrolled in Hofstra University and commuted from their homes. They got married after Laurette graduated and had two daughters, Rhonda and Jessica.
- I regret not moving away from home for college, so it's important to me that you at least try to go away for one semester.
- I'm only 11 and I've already seen 17 college campuses!
- Ok, but that means we have to visit A LOT of campuses, and I'm applying to 13 of them!

- Jessica didn't apply to any schools early decision, but she got a "likely letter" from Dartmouth College in March that kept it top of mind. After attending an admitted students weekend in Hanover, she couldn't imagine going anywhere else. She was especially excited that the unique academic calendar would allow her to study abroad at shorter intervals, because she was really nervous about being away from home. True to her aspirations, she ended up studying at Oxford University and in Washington, DC!
- The only thing the schools you're applying to have in common is that they're hard to get into. What do you really want?
- I feel like this is the only time in my life I'll get to pick where I can live regardless of my job prospects or family. Why not pick somewhere beautiful?
