  • "The Widow Douglas she took me for her son, and she allowed she would sivilize me; but it was rough living in the house all the time, considering how dismal regular and decent the widow was in all her ways; and so when I couldn't stand it no longer I lit out. I got into my old rags and my sugar-hogshead again, and was free and satisfied. But Tom Sawyer he hunted me up and said he was going to start a band of robbers, and I might join if I would go back to the widow and be respectable. So I went back."
  • "Now, we'll start a band of robbers and call it Tom Sawyer's Gang. Everybody that wants to join has got to take an oath, and write his name in blood.

  • Huck is kidnapped by his father and taken away to live in a cabin in the woods. His father is an abusive alcoholic. Huck fakes his death and runs away. 
  • "Doan' hurt me- don't! I hain't ever done no harm to a ghos'. I alwuz liked dead people, en done all I could for 'em. You go en git in de river ag'in, whah you b'longs, en doan' do nuffin to Ole Jim, 'at 'uz alwuz yo' freind'.
  • "Hello, Jim!"
  • Huck goes to Jackson Island and finds Jim, one of the widow's runaway slaves. They plan to go to the free states together.
  • Huck and Jim miss the turn to Cairo and later meet two con men. They agree to allow the con men onto their raft and they travel together. They stop at small towns and the con men perform their plays.
  • "Gentlemen, I will reveal it to you, for I feel I may have confidence in you. By rights I am a duke!"
  • "Yes, gentlemen, you see before you, in blue jeans and misery, the wanderin', exiled, trampled-on, and sufferin' rightful King of France."
  • Huck and Jim finally get away from the con men and later come to the Phelps' farm. Jim is taken into custody and locked away. Huck realizes that the Phelps are Tom Sawyer's aunt and uncle. 
  • "He's a runaway n***, and they've got him. Was you looking for him?"
  • "Gimme the rags; I can do it myself. Don't stop now; don't fool around here, and the evasion booming along so handsome; man the sweeps, and set her loose!"
  • Huck asks Tom for his help to free Jim and Huck has an easy plan but Tom wants to make it an adventure and do it like in the books. After all of the unnecessary adventure, Jim is free. Tom gets shot in the leg and he finally tells Huck that Jim was free all along.
