  • Maori first settled in Tamaki Makaurau in  1350 and they were split into tribes(iwi):Ngai Tai, ngati Paoa and Ngai te ata. Ngai Tai settled in Maraetai, whitford and Howick, where as Ngai te ata settled south of the manukau, at Waiuku. Ngati Paoa, a Hauraki tribe, was along the coast from Whangapaoroa to Thames
  • Ngai Tai lived under forest cover in the Waitakere and controlled land form Kaipara, across to Mahurangi and down to Takapuna.Wai-o-hua( a federstion of tribes) had
  • Ngati Paoa people started moving in to the hauraki gold and as far as Mahurangi in the early 18th century.
  • 1740-1750: Ngati Whatua-o-kaipara invaded the isthmus and killed kiwi tamaki, paramount chief of Wai-o-hua .The defeaters of Ngati Whatua-o-kaipara secured the dominance of the isthmus by intermarrying with Nga Oho(descendants of Wai-o-hua).
  • 1600-1750: Tamaki tribes built rows of small houses around the volcano cones, building pa(defensive settlements). Across the isthmus, they developed 2000 hectares of kumara gardens.
  • 1750: Population grew from tens to thousands. The isthmus was New Zealand's most populous area before the Europeans came.
