  • The Plan
  • The start
  • Spotted
  • Philip's plan was that an armada of 130 ships would sail from Spain along the french coast, pick up 30,000 Spanish troops and invade and occupy England. Led by Duke of Medina-sidonia, who had no maritime experience. They would travel in a crescent shape as a way of defence.
  • The English Attack
  • They set sail on the 28th of May, and arrived in corunna on the 19th June. On the 21st of July they set sail to pick up 30,000 troops from the Spanish Netherlands.
  • The battle of Gravelines
  • The English could already see an attack coming so they had built big beacons all along the coast to notify sightings. The armada was first spotted on the 29th Of July of Cornwall. The armada continued to Calais to pick up the soldiers but they were not ready so they were delayed for 7 days.
  • The end of the Armarda
  • Early on August the 7th, an attack was lead by Sir Francis Drake. 8 fire ships were sent towards the Spanish fleet. The Spanish fleet cut their anchors to get away from danger quickly, breaking the crescent formation.
  • The next day, the battle of gravelines began. The English continuously fired from a distance of about 100m, causing huge amount of damage but not sinking any ships. The Spanish were not prepared for sea and could barely defend themselves. With the ships scattered Medina-sidonia attempted to lead his ships home. The English chased them with constant fire.
  • The winds changed and forced the Spanish to flee. there water was polluted, food rotten and they had no maps of the water they found themselves in. Many ships wreaked, many soldiers were slaughtered by Scott's and Irish on the coast. Only 65 ships returned safety to Spain. Philip was humiliated, and annoyed God was on their side.
