On June, 17th 1972 a night watchman saw a piece of tape on a lock and removed it but later saw it was retaped and called the police. The police caught 5 burglars who were a part of CREEP, who wiretapped the Watergate building in order to receive information about Democratic Campaign strategy. Later the Washington post ran the story on their front page.
Some of the requested tapes were missing and others had mysterious 18.5-minute gaps. Nixon’s aides denied erasing the minutes and blamed it on Nixon’s secretary but it was seen as an effort to hide evidence. 7 top white house officials were indicted and a prosecutor gave a secret report and a full suitcase of evidence against the president which led to considering impeachment charges against the president. Nixon was asked to give up more tapes but only gave edited transcripts. The transcripts had a desire among Nixon and his aides to punish political opponents and things on Watergate.
Nixon was forced to turn over the remaining tapes and there were 3 articles of impeachment against him. They charged him with misusing presidential power and other major things. The tapes revealed that Nixon knew he was violating the law and that he contributed to the Watergate cover-up. The president and his advisors were seen as mean and it was concluded that Nixon was guilty and a liability. They told him that he should resign, so he did in 1974. He admitted what he did was wrong and that he was only trying to help the nation.
