I have been told that my baby has Down syndrome. What does that mean and is it my fault?
“Down syndrome means your baby was born with an extra chromosome — something that happens before birth.”
Down Syndrome is usually random it is not the fault of anyone.

I did some research online and I discovered that the age of the mother is a factor. I was 40 when I gave birth.
It is great that you did some research. I am happy to give you context. While maternal age is a factor, paternal age, and very frequently, a random error during cell division can also play a role. That is why it is said to be random.
Everyone has chromosomes, which are tiny instruction books in our cells. Normally, we have 23 pairs, but in Down syndrome, there’s an extra copy of chromosome 21.”
