The Compromise of 1850 was a rather controversial time, as laws like the Fugitive Slave Law were passed and this compromise really held the rights of slaves in debate.
After successfully expanding the territory after winning the Mexican-American War, Congress must decide if slavery should be allowed in these newly-acquired lands.
When California wished to join the Union as a free state, Congress was faced with a dilemma. If they allowed another free state in, then there would be an imbalance of free and slave states.
Eventually, Congress allowed California to join the Union as a free state, and allowed New Mexico and Utah to decide if they wanted to be a free state or a slave state. However, Texas would lose the boundary claims in New Mexico but would be soon compensated with $10 million dollars.
The Fugitive Slave Law was also enacted during this time. This controversial law demanded that northerners must return escaped slaves to the South, even though slaves in the North were supposed to be free.
However, there is some good news. While the slavery was still ongoing, the slave trade was prohibited, and the North refused to enforce the Fugitive Slave Law,questioning the fairness of the law.
