- Wow it sounds crucial in supporting our students! How does IDEA specifically support students and their families?
- IDEA is a law that provides appropriate public education to eligible children with disabilities throughout the nation and ensures special education and related services to those children, supports early intervention services for infants and toddlers and their families, and awards competitive discretionary grants.

- IDEA ensures that schools will provide services to evaluate, and provide an IEP for the students while guaranteeing parent involvement throughout the process. Since this is not a one-size fits-all situation, IDEA makes sure meet needs directly and recognizes the right parent's have to be fully involved for their child's education.
- That sounds great! What limitations can IDEA bring?

- I am glad you asked. Some limitations with implementing IDEA include varying understandings of what "appropriate education" means per state and district. This means some schools may be able to provide stronger resources for their students vs other districts.

- Thank you for all of the information! How can we as staff be sure to adhere to the law?
- Staff can do a few things such as while being involved on the IEP team, providing the most accurate data on the student's behavior, coursework, and even offer suggestions for best ways to accommodate the student. ( O'Shea, 2022)

- That is great to know! How can we best advocate for students and families under IDEA?
- Another way staff can adhere to IDEA is by gaining understanding of how LRE (Least Restrictive Environment) works. It allows students to have meaningful access to peers with or without disabilities, meaning services can be provided in both general ed classrooms and special ed classrooms. (AskResource, 2025)

- Three ways we can advocate for the students and families under IDEA are: Truly listen to families concerns and questions during the process. This may be their first time navigating this process.Being aware of cultural perspectives that may be shaping their perspectives in the processBeing available to the families for multiple conversations through the process. Involve them in the IEP process and providing one on one communication would be more than appreciated. (Breiseth, 2024)
