To punish the colonists, Parliament passed the Coercive Acts, which the colonists called the "Intolerable Acts" because they were unbearable.The first Coercive Act closed Boston Harbor until the destroyed tea was paid for. British warships blockaded the harbor, crippling Boston's trade and economy.The second Act dissolved the Massachusetts legislature, placing the colony under British military rule, stripping it of self-governance.The third Act, the Quartering Act, forced colonists to house British soldiers, who took over homes and consumed family resources.Parliament hoped these laws would tighten control and end the rebellion, but they had the opposite effect. Protests grew, and colonial resentment toward England deepened.
