Italian astronomer, Father Giuseppe Piazzi, in 1801, spotted the first object to be discovered in the asteroid belt called Ceres.
Ceres is the closest dwarf planet to the sun. It is the only dwarf planetfound in the inner solar system.

Dawn discovered several bright spots on the surface of Ceres. The brightest area is located on Occator crater.
It was also noted that Ceres has numerous craters of varying sizes and many of these have a central peak.

Scientists are currently studying possible causes for the bright spots on the surfaceof Ceres. More recently, color variations coming from images produced by Dawn show that these bright spots are composed of magnesium sulfate and possibly other substances such as water ice. This discovery suggests that Ceres is an active dwarf planet.

As with the moons of Jupiter and Saturn, terraforming Ceres would first require that the surface temperature be raised in order to sublimate its icy outer layer. ... This would result in Ceres' crust thawing and turning into a dense, water vapor-rich atmosphere.

Truly its own world, Ceres has the ability to support life, however, it also sports some other interesting, earth-like features. The surface of the planet remains geologically active, mainly through means of volcanic activity.
