- Katie! Lynn! We're moving our home from Iowa to Georgia. Get ready! All your stuff is in the car already. Uncle Katsuhisa is waiting for you.  
- Okay, mom and dad. Just let us find our stuff.
- Lynn! All the girls in class ignored me! Why? Why is this happening to me?
- Alright, I understand. Thanks, Lynnie.
- Calm down, Katie. It'll be alright. Listen to me. Sometimes, people in America will judge others just for being different from them. That's why mom and dad are only friends with other Japanese-Americans.
- Don't worry about me, guys. I'm ok. I'm just feeling a little tired these days.
- Are you sure, Lynn? Sammy and I are worried about you. I heard that you anemia, you know. Even though it's not life-threatening, please get better quickly. 
- Yeah! We haven't even gone on a picnic together in a while. I feel like we're not as close as we used to be.
- She died alone.
- Lynn! No! Please, come back! This isn't fair. Come back!
- No one else in history has ever been as sad as I am right now.
- I should have been there for Lynn when she died.
- I miss you, Lynn.
- I shouldn't have blown up at Lynn like that before she died.
- I need to find whatever is left of Lynn. Pencils or hair, I can never let go of her.
- The family recovered from the tragedy of Lynn's death over time. They all took steps in growing as people. For example, Katie's mom decided to join a workers' Union to fight for better working conditions despite originally being afraid to lose her job. At the end of the book, they traveled to Lynn's dream destination, a beach in California, to honor her. This symbolized the fact that they were moving on from Lynn's death while still  remembering and paying respect to her. The end of the story presents a grown version of Katie who is mature, responsible, and smart.
