- There is very little food, and his parents are becoming weaker.- His mother eventually leaves the house to search for food and try to find a way to help the family.- Sungju doesn't fully understand at first where his mother has gone or what will happen next.This is the beginning of Sungju losing his family

I must find food
Sungju realizes that his mother isn't coming back and his father is also no longer there to take care of him. He is now essentially on his own. This forces him to face a reality he never expected. He must figure out how to survive without his parents. His understanding of his parents also changes because he begins to realize that they were struggling just as much as he was. Loss and loneliness

Young-bum: Sungju? Is that really you? What happened to you? Come inside! You need food and water!
After being left alone, Sungju becomes extremely weak from hunger. He knows he cannot survive by himself, so he goes to Young-bum for help. Young-bum is shocked by Sungju's appearance because the famine has changed him so much, so he shares food and water. Their interaction shows that friendship becomes extremely important to Sungju's survival.Survival and Friendship
