Celia overhears her friend Devon talking with Marianne and decides to ask him about the encounter in the hall. She wasn't sure, but she thought that she heard them talking about drugs.
... seriously. I can hook you up.
Mari, I don't want that stuff. I don't smoke or drink, I definitely don't do LSD. Stop trying to sell it to me.
After class, Celia confronts Devon in the hall...
Dev? How do you know that? I know that it's easy to get addicted, and there's a lot of side affects, but...
What was that about Devon? You do know that LSD and other drugs are really bad for you, right?
My brother. He got addicted to LSD a few years ago. He started off with he same dose, but he said that after the second day taking it there wasn't any effect, so he upped his dose. Then he kept taking more and more and more until he died. We first thought it was the LSD, but then realized that he asphyxiated. He had been arrested and hogtied by the police.
Marianne was trying to sell it to me. I told her no. I don't want to go down that road. Addiction isn't pretty. I know firsthand how ugly it is.
Celia excused herself to the bathroom about halfway through her Health class. She felt awful...
I had no idea that Devon's brother had died. I mean, I honestly didn't know he had a brother at all. His family doesn't speak about him at all.
Devon told me the a little about LSD and its affects. I want to know more, and what's better is I have a presentation to do for Health. And I get to pick the topic.
She though about it for a second.
That night at home, Celia started on her research...
That's interesting. The most common places where LSD is sold are “raves,” dance clubs, and concerts.
And there are several ways to take it. The most common are on squares of paper called "blotters," tablets called "microdots," and gelatin squares known as "windowpanes." These forms of acid are where some of its street names come from.
The next morning, as Celia was headed to school, her Mom Sarah asked her about her project.
Hey sweetie, how's that project you were working on last night going? What class is it for?
No, it's actually pretty hard to overdose on LSD. Devon said he died because the police hogtied him when he was unresponsive and seemed uncontrollable. He was taken to juvie where passed out. Then he went to the hospital, but he died about a week later.
So he overdosed?
I stayed up too late but I finished it, that's why I'm running a little late. Anyway, it's for my Health class. I had to pick a topic to present on, and I chose LSD because I found out that Devon's brother died after taking too much.
Later that day in Health, Celia finished up her presentation on the dangers of LSD.
… and finally, some of the signs that someone is using or abusing LSD are dilated pupils, a raised body temperature, higher heart rate and blood pressure, excessive sweating, insomnia, a loss of appetite, a dry mouth, and tremors. There are many different in and outpatient options for treatment, because even though LSD is physically non-addictive, people are still at risk for becoming psychologically dependent on the drug and its effects.
