  • To see how people conformed to new roles, Zimbardo conducted a study in Stanforduniversity were he observed how quickly people would adopt the roles of guards or prisoners
  • Healthy male volunteers were paid $15 a day to take part. They were randomly allocated the roles of guard and prisoners, 9 prisoners were arrested at their homes without warning, then they were blindfolded and taken to the prison were they were stripped and given clothes to wear.
  • The Guards quickly took on their roles and gave the 'prisoners' hard and labour intensive tasks. in intend of dehumanising them. The guards were given uniform and wooden batons although physical violence wasn't permitted.
  • The guards were however permitted to devise most rules and treated the prisoners cruelly. This led to the prisoners revelling against the guards after 2 days, the guards stopped violence and fire distinguishers to stop the rebellion.
  • After 6 days the prison experiment was stopped due to the brutality that the guards were using on the prisoners. Many prisoners developed anxiety and depression from the study which received many criticism due to its ethics.
  • The prison environment was a key factor for the behaviour of the guards and their quick take onto the roles. This study showed how people will conform to roles, specially if they are heavily stereotypedlike prison guards.
