  • Sri Lanka is an island country located in the Indian Ocean. The total land area is about 65,610 square kilometres. The central part of the southern half of the island is mountainous with heights more than 2.5 Km. The core regions of the central highlands contain many complex topographical features such as ridges, peaks, plateaus, basins, valleys and escarpments. The remainder of the island is practically flat except for several small hills that rise abruptly in the lowlands

  • After years of mismanagement, Sri Lanka's economy is in the grips of a debt crisis. The Sri Lankan rupee has plunged 32% since the beginning of the year, making it the world's worst performing currency, trading even lower against the U.S. dollar than the Russian ruble, which has rebounded to its prewar level
  • Politics
  • Sri Lanka has been able to achieve and maintain social indicators which are unusually high relative to the level of its per capita income and economic development. A very fertilized ecosystem with many crops and livestock. 
  • Social Structure 
  • Buddhism is the major religion followed in Sri Lanka, with 70.2% of the population identifying as Buddhist. Of the remaining Sri Lankan population, 12.6% identify as Hindu, 9.7% identify as Muslim and 6.1% identify as Christian.
  • Sri Lanka is a semi-presidential representative democratic republic, where the President of Sri Lanka is both head of state and head of government. It relies on a multi-party system. Executive power is exercised by the President on the advice of the Prime Minister and the Cabinet of Ministers.
  • In Sri Lanka, there are four key elements that comprise social stratification: caste, class, gender, and ethnicity. Based on these elements of stratification, the social class and caste system developed in Sri Lanka historically.
