- After World War 1, the Italians were left feeling very discontent. Italy did not get their their promised territory, it was suffering from economic crisis, including unemployment, a shortage of food grains and inflation. Social unrest and political instability also led to the rise of Fascism in Italy.
- The National Fascist Party was an Italian political party created by Mussolini in 1919. Fascism is a political movement that embraces far-right nationalism and the forceful suppression of any opposition, all overseen by an authoritarian government.

- In 1922 Benito Mussolini led a coalition of fascist leaders to Rome and forced the king to yield the government to Mussolini. Mussolini boldly promised to rescue Italy by reviving its economy and rebuilding its armed forces. He vowed to give Italy strong leadership.
- Mussolini created a totalitarian state. He ended the freedom of speech, free press, and fair elections. Those who opposed him were at risk of imprisonment and sometimes even execution. Mussolini takes control of Italy and the lives of its citizens using force.
- Mussolini used propaganda in many ways, it was a crucial instrument for acquiring and maintaining power. Mussolini carefully censored the media to develop a personality cult around him. He was also glorified in photos and film footage.
- For most Italians, an oppressive fascist regime only brought them even more economic hardship and loss of basic human rights, but landowners did benefit from some of the laws passed.
