- All of the 85 sepoys that refused to use the cartridges were court-martialed and sentenced to jail. The British humiliated the sepoys by stripping them of their uniforms and shackling their ankles in front of 4000 other sepoys at the sentencing.
- 4000 sepoys were horrified by the humiliation they witnessed. They rapidly subdued the British, and the sepoys who had been imprisoned were released.
- When the British troops eventually restored control, they executed thousands of sepoys and other Indians.
