Jacques Catrier was getting ready for his first voyage to find a route to Asia, called the Northwest passage. The King of France (Francis the first) had authorized him to go and locate a new route to Asia as well a finding gold and other riches.

Catrier sailed many places on his first journey which only lasted 20 days. He sailed to the St. Lawrence river, the western coast of Newfoundland, the Gulf of St. Lawrence and which is now known today Antiscoti Island.
War in Europe. Journey Continues
In the days in which Catrier sailed, he claimed many different parts of which is now known as Canada for France. Jacques Catrier also captured two Native Americanson his trip.
Return Home For Good
Jacques Catrier had come home from his 20 day voyage, had given report to the king, then Jacques Catriergot ready for another voyage. This journey would be going across the Atlantic Ocean with three ships, and 110 men. With the two captives along as guides,the explorers headed up the St.Lawrence River far as Quebec. That is where they established a camp. camp.
This time for this Journey, the king orders another nobleman named Jean Francois de La Rocque de Roberval with finding a permanant colony in the northern lands. Roberval sets sail. He arrives in August.
Jacques Cartier finally makes it home with what he thinks is gold and jewels. But he then finds out that they are just gems of no value.
