  • The Ball Was In My Court
  • Maddy Rivers
  • Before it all happened...
  • Basketball was my entire life- it was for seven years. I lived and breathed the game. However, this changed..
  • My innocence died that night. So did my love for the game.
  • Those nights haunted my mind. I couldn't play the game I once loved.
  • Each time I stepped on that court, that love I had slowly slipped away.. until there was nothing left.
  • And now, those years are simply just memories. That joyful, energetic, basketball-loving little girl is gone.
  • Abstract For the majority of my childhood, I devoted every second to basketball. It was everything to me. After my sexual assault, the game I loved became my biggest trigger. I was absolutely devastated, I felt like a failure. I wanted to hold on to one of the only things I had left- the game, but I couldn't. I made the decision to walk away from something I loved more than anything, I felt as if I was not only failing myself- but my coaches and teammates who I played alongside for seven years. Through a long and taxing process, I began to work through my trauma and have become an unstoppable young woman. I promised myself to use my voice in all aspects of my life and advocate for those who can't advocate for themselves- I stick to this every day. Although my assault does not define me, it has shaped the woman I am today and everything I stand for.
  • Analysis On panel 4 I used multiple design elements in order to illustrate the change in emotion for basketball following my assault. I utilized asymmetrical balance, emphasis, contrast, texture and lines. I used asymmetrical balance and lines to demonstrate the difference in my emotions over time towards the game; each side was the same court and the same player but a difference in the overall emotions depicted. I used contrast and emphasis to illustrate how the game itself was still there- but I was not anymore. The use of light and dark colors demonstrates the loss of love. I utilized texture to blur myself- further depicting how that girl was not there anymore. The player on the right side and the use of texture acts as a focal point of the panel. Many of these design elements can be seen throughout my graphic novel.
