James Oglethorpe was born on the 22nd of December, 1696 to Eleanor and Theophilus Oglethorpe. He had a comfortable childhood living in the Westbrook Manor in Godalming with his ten other siblings.
James's family was very into politics ever since he was born. With his father being elected to the House of Commons when James was only two. He himself, as well as his three other brothers would also be in the House of Commons. James's were both Jacobites. Which due to English politics at the time caused trouble for James's political and military careers. Sadly James's father, Theophilus, would sadly die when James was just six.

In 1714 Oglethorpe entered Corpus Christi College at Oxford, but due to his on again off again attendance, and interest in the military, he quit college and joined a military academy in Paris. He then joined the army of Prince Eugene of Savoy during the Austro-Turkish war of 1716 where he preformed many successful campaigns against them.
