  • Before India was colonized by British troops, Indian agriculture was dominated by subsistence farming in small village communities. Farmers usually only grew enough crops to feed themselves and the community. If extra food was gathered due to favourable climatic conditions, this food would be stored and used later on during the year when food would be needed.

  • India was colonized by British troops in 1858, and zamindars became heredity landlords in India and were responsible for collecting fixed taxes from peasants. The British empire wanted resources from its colonies and made policies to force Indian farmers to cultivate crops for the market, especially cotton.

  • I miss my old farm...
  • I'm sorry, there is no food left today

  • Peasants were forced to pay fix amounts of taxes to the zamindars, and most Indian farmers became landless labourers to be able and pay off their taxes. The change in agriculture in India from subsistent farming to a cash crop economy that was benefiting the British, caused famine in India and increased their dependency on food imports from the British.
