Dia: 2
Ionic Concentration: 3.5%
Pressure: Up to 10,000 PSI
Dia: 3
Threat: Hull Oxidization and Corrosion
Conclusion: Hull needs protection
Dia: 4
Oh nooooooo
Dia: 5
Meanwhile on the Surface
Nooooooo
Dia: 6
After Grieving...
So how could we have prevented this?
By Using Zinc!
Dia: 7
Everything! But we need to start with the basics. Its atomic Number is 30
And its atomic mass is... 65.390 Its on the board behind you
Exactly!
Dia: 8
But the key is its electron configuration: [Ar] 4s² 3d¹⁰
Meaning it has 2 electrons it can lose
Yup, that's why it's in Group 12, a transition metal
Dia: 9
Iron is also Group 12, why can't we use that?
Zinc has a larger atomic radius than Iron, so its outer electrons are held less tightly
So its ionization energy is low, so it gives away electrons easily.
Dia: 10
Because its configuration is [Ar] 4s² 3d¹⁰, the d subshell shields the valence electrons
Which is why it easily loses the 4s² electrons
Which is why Zinc is so useful!
Dia: 11
I still don't get it
Thats fine, we just needed to agree that Zinc likes to lose 2 electrons
Alright we agree
So, what was the hull of your AUV made of
Dia: 12
Well, it was made of Aluminum
And what does Aluminum do in water?
It rusts?
Exactly
Dia: 13
So it loses its electrons first?
Exactly
I still don't get it
Dia: 14
Think of it like a mob of angry people sieging a castle
So, the Castle is the AUV?
Yup!
And the people are the water?
Dia: 15
Yes, the people are the water, so imagine like a lot of people trying to break into a Castle
Okay so what's Zinc?
Dia: 16
Zinc will give its electrons away, meaning Aluminum won't oxidize
So Aluminum won't rust!
Dia: 17
So the knights will sacrifice themselves
The Zinc is sacrificial, it's called a Sacrificial Anode
Dia: 18
So we just need to cover the hull in Zinc
Then the aluminum won't rust
So the AUV is Saved
Yup!
Dia: 19
Often, Factories often produce robotics parts by Zinc die-casting
The parts produced provide EMI/RFI shielding
They're also self-lubricating
They're really useful for manufacturing robots!
Dia: 20
Often, Factories often produce robotics parts by Zinc die-casting
The parts produced provide EMI/RFI shielding
You just have to be careful while manufacturing it, as it can be toxic
They're really useful for manufacturing robots!
Dia: 21
So are robots made of pure Zinc?
Not exactly
Dia: 22
There are also experiments of Zinc in nanorobotics
That sounds cool!
It is but its very experimental technology
The main importance of Zinc is its galvanization protection
Dia: 23
So to recap
Dia: 24
Zinc provides excellent Galvanic Protection
Which is useful to prevent rust in AUVs
Exactly, its used everywhere from Cars to AUVs
Dia: 25
However, mining Zinc requires a lot of power
Which produces greenhouse gases
However, it can be recycled, unless it's die-cast Zinc
Dia: 26
Are there any alternatives to Zinc?
Dia: 30
It rusts?
Exactly!
Dia: 31
3 Weeks Later
Hull Integrity Failing...
Will explode in 3 2 1...
Dia: 32
Who are you?
I'm Alex, a Robotics Engineer
Okay? Why would Zinc, the stuff in sunscreen, prevent the AUV from imploding?
Dia: 33
Yes, but it's the Electronegativity thats important
Which is low due to its electron configuration
Yup it's very low, it actually wants to give electrons away
Dia: 34
So just make it out of Zinc then!
Not exactly...
Zinc is more electronegative than Steel
Dia: 35
The Zinc is the knights
So the Zinc protects the AUV
Yes, the knights will give their lives to protect the Castle because they are more electronegative
Dia: 36
What else can we do with Zinc?
Plenty of stuff
Dia: 37
This means we can use Zinc to form alloys specific for each robot
What else is Zinc useful for?
Other than Micro-robots not much
Dia: 38
Its can also be used to make strong parts
Though it is weaker than Steel
But its much cheaper!
However, when it's used for Die-Casting, it can be toxic!
Dia: 39
Outside of manufacturing its non-toxic and used everywhere!
