This storyboard outlines the story of a guy named Zack who stumbles upon an education position teaching adult learners at the University of Rhode Island’s Cooperative Extension. This story outlines his training days and his first day on the job. The story finishes by outlining suggestions for improving AED 685: Adults in Agriculture Education.

Hiring: Extension Educator
The URI Cooperative Extension posted a position for an educator via their cooperative extension. Part of the interview process was understanding the purpose of extension education. Zack’s knowledge and background helped secure him the job. He shared that the Morrill Act (1862) provided state universities with acreage to support agriculture research, the Smith-Lever Act (1914) allowed for the creation of extension programs to educate the community on agriculture, and the Agricultural Research, Extension and Education Reform Act (1998), revised federal funding to support extension programs. Zack was offered the position and eagerly accepted. He had lots to learn!

Training Day 1: Andragogy
Zack was fortunate to have a great mentor during his training. Malcolm Knowles was a pioneer in adult education in the USA, and he held a position at URI’s extension. The first lesson was in andragogy, the art and science of adult learning. Malcolm shared that he dedicated his life to studying andragogy. He shared the five assumptions of adult learners and his four principles of learning, all of which he spent years researching. This would help Zack in his role as an extension educator.

Training Day 2: Metacognition
On the second day of training, Malcolm covered the metacognition cycle. He said using this cycle in learning helps learners be accountable for their learning and become independent thinkers. This supports andragogy and how adults think. The cycle starts by analyzing the task, then moves to evaluating strengths and weaknesses, planning an approach, applying strategies, monitoring progress, and wrapping up with reflection. He really made Zack think about thinking!

Training Day 3: Experiential Learning
The third day of training was very special. Malcolm had a guest speaker join. His name was David Kolb. David Kolb shared his famous learning theory, Kolb’s Learning Cycle also known as the Experiential Learning Theory. He said this is an excellent tool to help create hands-on lessons that connect to real-world experiences.

Training Day 4: Tools and Tips
Zack was feeling more prepared each day. He had wonderful knowledge of educating adult learners, the reason behind extension education, and learned some excellent ways to approach lesson planning. Day four will wrap up his training experience. Malcom and David decided to share some engaging resources with Zack today. They highlighted resources such as Pear Deck, an interactive Slides platform, Google Drive for group collaboration when working on documents, slides, and spreadsheets, and Padlet, an interactive digital bulletin board. At this point, Zack felt ready for his first day alone. He would be teaching adults how to process maple syrup.

First Day on the Job
Cooperative Extension
It was finally Zack’s first day on the job. He was nervous but felt prepared, thanks to his mentor, Malcolm. Zack’s first lesson was working with adults in the community who are aspiring sugarers. He developed a strong critical thinking lesson on tapping trees and processing sap that included hands-on experience, journaling, and reflection. His goal was to prepare all learners to apply the knowledge and skills learned to their own backyard operations.

Enhancing AED 685 in the Future
I hope you enjoyed the storyboard of Zack, a newly hired extension educator. I had a great time developing the story and enjoyed the creativity around the assignment. I enjoyed this course and found it to be helpful in my upcoming role as an adjunct professor at URI. I wonder if, in the future, this course can include more video demonstrations (like an introduction during Week 1), more discussion/collaboration assignments, an assignment that is specific to the nearest extension for the student (in my case, it would be URI), and a graded assignment that makes the collaboration group meet once via video. That said, I really enjoyed AED 685!

...One Step Closer to EdS...
This assignment concludes another course for me. I am very grateful for the opportunity to be in the Agriculture Education, EdS program here at Murray State University. This course will directly benefit my work as an adjunct in the future and as a professional. I look forward to completing my EdS and starting my EdD in Murray State’s P-20 Community Leadership program this fall.
